Shock and grief has engulfed music lovers in Uganda following the death of veteran singer, saxophonist and Afrigo Band leader Moses Matovu.
The sad news of the passing of Matovu reverberated Thursday, September 24 morning as residents of Kibuli Market in Makindye Division, Kampala District, and the entire Uganda came to terms with his untimely death.
According to residents and eye-witnesses, the music icon was attacked by a yet-to-be-identified man who is on the run. He sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Kibuli Hospital by a boda boda rider, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that at approximately 5:30 a.m., Matovu went to the residence of his girlfriend.
“It is alleged that as he and the lady were leaving the residence, they were confronted by a male suspect who is also alleged to have previously been in a relationship with the same lady,” Kawala Rachael, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, says.
Police have since arrested the lady who was in the company of the musician to help with investigations.
“We call upon members of the public to remain calm and allow investigators to conduct their work without interference. We assure the public that all necessary steps are being taken to apprehend the suspect and establish the facts of the matter,” Kawala adds.
Matovu euologised as a great man
Speaking to journalists after the news, popular music promoter Musa Balunywa said Matovu will be missed for his tremendous contribution to the arts industry.
“This is the person we have been looking to, the person we have been referring to for the issues of this industry. So, I call upon security apparatus and the government to protect the artists as well.”
Musician Kenneth Mugabi has also mourned the death of Matovu.
“We have lost a giant,” Mugabi said in his tribute. “Mzee Moses Matovu gave Uganda something far greater than songs. He showed us what it means to build, to preserve, to lead and to remain committed to the music across generations.”
In his condolense message, the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) Executive Director George William Nyombi Thembo described Matovu as a descent gentleman, whose works has inspired many.
“I don’t know anybody who Matovu has ever annoyed. His job has been entertaining people. A legacy of 50 years. The man who made rhumba Ugandan…he made rhumba Ugandan.”
He said he has contacted government officials to see how the late Matovu can be honoured for his huge contribution to Ugandan music industry.
