Bongo Flava singer Rich Mavoko has dismissed claims that his music career lost momentum after he left Wasafi Records, saying he does not allow negative comments about his career to affect him.
Speaking during an interview on Radio 47’s Maskani show hosted by Billy Miya and Mbaruk Mwalim, the singer responded to suggestions that his profile dropped after leaving the record label and that he now performs at low-profile events.
“Uliingia Wasafi, chati ikapanda, ukatoka Wasafi, chati ikashuka mpaka wanasema siku hizi unapiga show za mchangani,” Billy Miya remarked during the interview.
In response, Mavoko rejected the characterization, insisting that he remains active in the music business and is not bothered by public opinion.
“Hakuna mahali ambapo sisi tunafanya show za mchangani,” he said.
He explained that public criticism is something artistes must learn to handle, especially when they have spent time in the spotlight.
“Ukiwa kwa spotlight chochote unaweza kuongelewa,” he said, adding that musicians should not be disturbed by ordinary negative publicity unless it involves serious allegations that could damage their lives or reputations.
The Pacha Wangu hitmaker compared himself to a fruitful tree that naturally attracts stones.
“Mimi ni mti wenye matunda, lazima mawe yarushwe,” he remarked, encouraging artistes to maintain an independent mindset and avoid being distracted by criticism.
According to him, there is no such thing as bad publicity for an artist, except accusations involving criminal or unethical conduct.
“Msanii hana ile bad publicity. Mbaya ni ile tu kusingiziwa umeharasiwa ama umekula madawa,” he said.
Mavoko further emphasized that he does not look down on any source of income, stating: “Hakuna hela ndogo, hela ni hela.”
The singer also addressed questions about his personal life, particularly marriage. Asked when he plans to settle down, Mavoko responded humorously.
“Hapo 60 I think naeza jaribu hapo. Kwenye hamsini sijioni, lakini kwa mbali naona 65. Ujana ni mzuri,” he said with laughter.
He clarified that he was not discouraging others from getting married, but said his current lifestyle and music career make it difficult to settle down.
Mavoko revealed that he has two sons and maintains a cordial relationship with their mothers, despite each living separately.
Mavoko was previously signed to Wasafi Records, one of Tanzania’s most influential music labels, before embarking on a solo career.
