Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has said efforts to impeach President William Ruto would be futile under the current political landscape, arguing that the opposition lacks the numbers required to initiate and pass such a motion in Parliament.
Speaking during the Mic Cheque Podcast interview uploaded on YouTube on Sunday, June 14, 2026, Sifuna dismissed calls from Kenyans urging opposition leaders to begin impeachment proceedings against the Head of State.
“Huwa naona watu wanakuja hapa kusema ati Sifuna unalalamika kwa social media, si you impeach Ruto. We actually have less than 20 MPs in our Linda Mwananchi movement. We are not complaining, we are just painting the right picture for you,” he said.
The Nairobi Senator explained that an impeachment process must begin in the National Assembly and requires support from at least one-third of members before it can proceed.
“Kuleta impeachment motion tu, you need a third of the National Assembly, which is over 100 MPs,” Sifuna stated.
He noted that securing such numbers would have been easier before ODM entered into a working arrangement with the government.
“When ODM was still ODM, because all our MPs voted against the Finance Bill 2024 before the party was co-opted into government, it would have been easy. Right now, unatoa wapi hizo numbers?” he posed.

According to the senator, failed impeachment attempts could instead strengthen the President politically.
“Hakuna, because every attempt unawinda mnyama and you don’t get, you are actually strengthening that person,” he said.
Sifuna urged Kenyans to focus on future elections rather than pushing for an impeachment process that currently lacks parliamentary backing.
“So ile kitu sisi tunataka kuwaomba, ni when we speak about these things, we are painting for you a picture so that you can make corrections during the next elections,” he said.
He added that senators can only act after the National Assembly has completed its role, maintaining that without sufficient support in the lower House, removing the President through impeachment remains politically unattainable.
