The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has intensified investigations into the torching of a Mazda CX-5 along Thika Road during Monday’s 18th May 2026 fuel related protests, as authorities move to identify and arrest those responsible for the incident.
In a statement issued after the chaos, the DCI confirmed that detectives are currently analysing viral video footage believed to contain images of some of the main suspects linked to the attack.
According to investigators, the incident posed a serious threat to public safety and led to extensive property damage.
The agency noted that detectives are following crucial leads aimed at ensuring all individuals involved are brought to book.
“This incident not only endangered lives but also resulted in significant property damage, and investigations remain active,” the DCI said.
The agency further revealed that efforts are underway to identify every person captured in the circulating footage, adding that law enforcement officers are committed to ensuring justice is served.
“Detectives are diligently pursuing crucial leads aimed at identifying and apprehending all those involved in this criminal act,” the statement added.
The DCI has now appealed to members of the public to assist with information that may help in the ongoing investigations.
Kenyans who may recognise suspects captured in the videos or have any relevant details have been urged to report to the nearest police station or use the #FichuaKwaDCI reporting channels.
“You can report anonymously by calling 0800 722 203 (toll-free) or through WhatsApp at 0709 570 000,” the agency stated.
At the same time, the National Police Service reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining law and order during demonstrations, warning against individuals who take advantage of protests to engage in criminal acts.
“The National Police Service reiterates its commitment to upholding public safety, protecting property, and ensuring that individuals who exploit protests for criminal activities are brought to justice in accordance with the law,” the statement concluded.
