Nigerian-American actor and musician Rotimi is challenging men to rethink traditional ideas of masculinity, arguing that being a strong man does not mean hiding or suppressing emotions.

The actor says many men were raised with the belief that showing vulnerability is a weakness, with boys often taught from an early age to “be tough” and keep their feelings to themselves.

According to Rotimi, becoming a better man can require unlearning those childhood lessons and developing the emotional maturity to understand and manage feelings.

“Becoming a better man sometimes means unlearning what you were taught as a boy, like we were taught that we be tough and hide our emotions,” Rotimi said.

He also challenged the idea that women want men who appear completely unaffected by situations or relationships.

Instead, Rotimi believes women need partners who can feel deeply without allowing their emotions to dictate their actions.

“A woman does not need a man who feels nothing; she needs a man mature enough to handle what he feels.”

His remarks touch on a broader conversation about modern masculinity and emotional intelligence, particularly the pressure placed on men to remain silent about their struggles.

For Rotimi, emotional maturity is not about becoming less masculine or abandoning strength. It is about being able to recognise your emotions, communicate them and respond to them responsibly.

The message also highlights how unresolved emotions can affect relationships. Rather than shutting down, avoiding difficult conversations or pretending everything is fine, emotionally mature men can acknowledge what they are experiencing and work through it constructively.

Ultimately, Rotimi’s message is simple: real strength is not the absence of emotion-it is knowing how to handle it.
