Several people are feared dead after a petrol tanker overturned and caught fire near Paul Boit Secondary School along the Eldoret-Turbo road.
The incident reportedly drew residents to the scene, with fears that some of those who went to collect spilled fuel may have been caught in the ensuing explosion and fire.
Police, firefighters and emergency responders have since arrived at the scene as efforts to manage the situation continue.
In a statement, the Kenya Red Cross described the incident as a “mass casualty incident”, saying the tanker explosion occurred near Paul Boit Secondary School along the Eldoret-Webuye road.
The organisation said its teams were responding alongside the Kenya Police and firefighters, while motorists were advised to keep off the affected stretch to facilitate emergency operations.
The number of casualties had not been confirmed at the time of publication.
