Several people are feared dead after a devastating fire gutted down houses in Makina area, Kibra Constituency, Nairobi County.
The fire that broke out on Saturday, May 24 morning is said to have affected approximately 40 households.
According to the Kenya Red Cross, the fire has since been contained by the Nairobi City County Fire Brigade.
“Together with Eagle Hospital, we have attended to 20 people injured in a fire incident that occurred earlier this morning in Makina, Kibera,” Kenya Red Cross says.
Area Member of Parliament, Peter Orero, says that the fire has killed six persons.
In a statement on Saturday morning, MP Orero says that six persons— one man, two women, and three children sustained serious burns and injuries and have been rushed to hospital for urgent medical attention.
“I extend my deepest condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones. This is a heartbreaking moment for all of us in Kibra,” MP Orero wrote, “We mourn with you, and we are committed to supporting you through this difficult time.”
The legislator says that he has dispatched a team to coordinate with emergency services and ensure that those affected receive immediate assistance, including medical care, counselling, and immediate attention.
“We are also working closely with relevant officials to investigate the cause of the fire and put in place long-term safety measures. Let us stand together as a community in compassion, in support, and in solidarity,” he adds.
