Six people killed in Mathioya landslide laid to rest

A sombre mood engulfed the burial ceremony of six victims of landslide in Kiganjo, Mathioya Constituency, on Friday, May 10.

The six died on Sunday, April 28 night after their homes were swept away by a landslide following heavy rains in the area.

The incident saw three houses swept away with heavy rains hampering rescue mission.

Leaders present led by Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro appealed to local leaders and county governments to reach out to and help as many victims of floods and landslides as possible.

Nyoro urged the leaders to be emphatic to an extent of using their personal money to help flood victims if the allocated emergency funds are exhausted.

Others leaders present were Mathioya MP Edwin Mugo, Murang’a Woman Rep Betty Maina, and Gatanga MP Edward Muriu among others.

President William Ruto, while leading a tree planting drive at Karua Forest in Maragua Constituency, also eulogized the victims lost in floods and landslides and asked Kenyans to remember them in prayers as the government is working on strategies and ways to help out the families.

Murang’a County Disaster Manager Bilha Wanjiku, shortly after the incident, said four people escaped unhurt while two were rushed to hospital.

Murang’a County Director of Meteorology Anthony Kinyua at the time urged locals in the landslide-prone areas to be cautious as heavy rains continue to ponder the area.
