Theories around power blackout at JKIA

Kenyans have taken to social media with various theories surrounding power blackout at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

The airport was hit with a two-hour power loss on Friday night leading to delays, redirecting of planes and even canceled flights.

City lawyer Donald Kipkorir wondered whether it was a genuine case of backup generators failing or a deliberate act of sabotage.

“Was the national blackout by KPLC including failure of backup generators at JKIA a deliberate act of sabotage? Did someone intend to sneak something at JKIA in the cover of darkness? Or did someone want direct procurement to import new generators for our airports by showing current ones are obsolete? Accidents aren’t always accidents.”

Another social media user, Pierre Kundi, remained confident that the power outage was not an accident.

“Such issues don’t just happen by accident, and if it did it was planned that way,” he added.

“I knew Kenya Power would support Luton Town FC, so KPLC didn’t want us to witness as Chelsea is being punished! Thanks to my generator, I am following this boring game closely. After the game Murkomen and JKIA leadership pls come for the generator,” Alinur Mohamed stated.

Cypy the Great, another netizen, believes something fishy was going on when JKIA was in the dark on Friday night.

“Whenever there is Kenya Power blackout nationwide and JKIA can’t afford backup generators reasons being petrol prices are high, just know that something fishy is going on.”

Transport Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen is currently holding a crisis meeting at Kenya Airports Authority head offices at JKIA, Nairobi.

KAA Board Chairman Caleb Kositany is also in attendance, as they assess damage caused by the blackout and resolutions to avert such instances in future.

“This situation WILL NOT happen again,” CS Murkomen affirmed.
