The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has formally petitioned the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to investigate the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) and its Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election candidate, Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru, over alleged breaches of electoral laws ahead of the July 16, 2026 vote.
In a complaint dated June 29, 2026, and addressed to the IEBC Electoral Code of Conduct Enforcement Committee, Lawyer Adrian Kamotho acting for UDA claimed the by-election campaign has been disrupted by incidents of violence, intimidation, destruction of campaign materials and hate speech.
The party argued that the contest, which was called following the death of former Ol Kalou MP David Kiaraho, should be conducted peacefully and in accordance with the Constitution and electoral laws.
According to the complaint, UDA alleges that supporters linked to DCP have engaged in a coordinated campaign of destroying rivals’ campaign materials and disrupting political activities.
The party cited an incident on June 27, 2026, in Captain town, where it claims a campaign billboard belonging to its candidate, Samuel Muchina Nyagah, was pulled down and destroyed. UDA further alleged that the group blocked roads, stoned vehicles and disrupted movement within the area.
It also claimed that some of the individuals involved were transported into Ol Kalou using trucks, whose registration numbers it listed as KDD 083Y and KCZ 083J. UDA said the matter was reported at Captain Police Station under Occurrence Book (OB) No. 05/28/06/2026.
Beyond the alleged violence, UDA accused the DCP candidate and his supporters of using inflammatory language during campaign rallies held between June 18 and June 22 in Karau Ward and Ol Kalou Town, saying the remarks breached the Electoral Code of Conduct by promoting hatred and risking violence.
The complaint further alleges that DCP supporters intimidated rival campaign agents and voters, including women and elderly residents, while accusing the party leadership of failing to restrain those involved.
UDA also accused DCP of making public statements that undermine confidence in the IEBC and the electoral process.
In its petition, the ruling party urged the electoral commission to launch immediate investigations into the allegations and summon DCP officials and candidate Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru to respond before the Electoral Code of Conduct Enforcement Committee.
The party further asked the commission to order DCP to publicly condemn the alleged acts of violence, issue directives to prevent further incidents, and impose sanctions where necessary.
UDA also requested the IEBC to invoke its powers under the Elections Act to facilitate the arrest and prosecution of individuals found responsible for the alleged offences and, where evidence warrants, consider restrictions on campaign activities or the disqualification of the candidate from the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election.
