Kenyans today join the rest of the world in marking Labour Day, with President William Ruto expected to lead the 2026 national celebrations in Vihiga County in a historic first outside Nairobi since independence.
This year’s celebrations are being held under the theme, “strengthening local production and protecting workers’ rights,” highlighting the need to empower local industries, create sustainable jobs, and safeguard workers’ welfare amid changing economic realities.
The annual event, which honours workers and recognises their contribution to national development, comes at a time when labour unions are pushing for improved salaries to cushion employees against the rising cost of living.
COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli, recently said workers’ representatives are negotiating for a pay rise, citing increased fuel prices, transport costs, food prices, and other basic commodities.
Labour and Social Protection Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua said preparations for the national event were complete, with heightened security and a multi-agency team deployed to manage crowds and maintain order.
Thousands of Kenyans began arriving at the venue from as early as 4am ahead of the celebrations, which are expected to feature key announcements on workers’ welfare and economic empowerment.
