“We will be ruthless against criminals”- Murkomen defends government ahead of June 25 protests

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has dismissed allegations that the government sponsors goons to disrupt protests, insisting that the State relies on trained police officers to maintain law and order.

Speaking during an interview with Citizen TV on June 22, 2026, Murkomen said the government has adequate security personnel and does not engage criminal gangs to enforce the law.

“The government does not deploy anti-protest goons. The government has enough police officers to deploy,” said Murkomen.

He maintained that police officers are professionally trained to respond according to the circumstances they encounter, adding that the National Police Service is solely responsible for investigating and arresting criminals.

“The government does not handle goons. The specific institution that deals with the investigation and arrest of criminals, including goons, is the National Police Service,” he stated.

Murkomen, however, faulted some sections of the Judiciary, saying certain magistrates fail to appreciate the seriousness of the country’s security challenges.

“Some of the courts are part of the problem; some of the magistrates do not understand the weight of the problem we are facing as a country,” he said, calling for cooperation among all arms of government in tackling criminal gangs.

The CS also urged politicians to stop using goons for political purposes, arguing that such practices have contributed to insecurity.

At the same time, Murkomen launched a scathing attack on former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, accusing him of previously undermining security structures and allegedly mobilizing goons to invade former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s farm.

“This man, the impeached DP, when he was in office as a DP, he would want to bypass the security systems to go and organize goons to invade Uhuru Kenyatta’s farm. Let him deny that he was not involved,” Murkomen claimed.

He further described Gachagua as “an agent of inflammatory statements” and “an agent of division.”

With the country preparing to mark the second anniversary of the 2024 Gen Z-led anti-finance bill protests on June 25, Murkomen assured Kenyans that peaceful demonstrations would be protected.

“I cannot guarantee there will be no goons; I can only guarantee security during the June 25th commemoration. We will be ruthless when it comes to dealing with criminals who will want to infiltrate any peaceful protests,” he said.

Murkomen also rejected claims linking him to criminal gangs, saying, “People should give me credit; at least you can accuse Murkomen of everything else, but you cannot accuse me of criminal activities.”

“As a former Sunday school teacher, I abhor any acts of criminality, including goons and violence,” he added.

His remarks come amid heightened political and security attention ahead of the planned June 25, 2026, commemoration marking the second anniversary of the 2024 Gen Z-led anti-finance bill protests.
