A section of Kapenguria -Lodwar highway swept away by floods

A section of the busy Kapenguria -Lodwar highway in West Pokot County was swept away by floods on Sunday April 28, 2024 due to the ongoing heavy rains in the country.

This was after floods washed away a section of the highway between Lous Market and Kambi Karaya.

The unexpected disruption has caused traffic congestion along the highway, as motorists and travelers were stranded after the tragic incident.

Meanwhile, West Pokot County Commissioner, Khalif Abdulahi, expressed grave concern over the unfortunate situation.

“Upon receiving reports of the incident, authorities swiftly dispatched traffic police from the Marich Police Station to the affected site,” said Abdulahi.

He emphasized the urgent need to alleviate the traffic congestion and explore alternative routes to ease the plight of stranded travelers.

“We understand the gravity of the situation,” remarked Abdulahi, as authorities scramble to address the crisis.

“Our priority is the safety and well-being of the stranded travelers. We’re working tirelessly to explore solutions and restore connectivity as quickly as possible,” he added.

Efforts to clear the highway are underway, with emergency personnel and construction crews mobilized to tackle the emergency at hand.

However, the sheer force of the floodwaters poses a formidable challenge, prolonging the ordeal for weary travelers.

“We’re doing everything we can to expedite the clearance process,” assures Abdulahi. “But we urge travelers to exercise patience and caution as we work to resolve this crisis,” he added.

With alternative routes being scarce and the main artery of the Kapenguria-Lodwar highway impassable, the plight of stranded travelers remains a pressing concern.

Meanwhile, stranded passengers had called on the government to move with speed and provide an alternative route to the vehicles plying the affected highway.

“It’s a nightmare,” laments John Kiptum, a commuter stranded along the impassable highway. “We were on our way to Lodwar for business, but now we’re stuck here with no idea when we’ll be able to continue our journey.”
