Residents and motorists plying the Thika–Mwingi–Garissa highway are expressing concern over the persistent El Niño warnings, with fears that transport could be severely disrupted.

The Mbakini Bridge was demolished nearly two years ago to pave way for its reconstruction by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA). The project was initially expected to take about four months, but construction is yet to be completed.

The situation has left motorists and residents struggling to navigate the section, where the temporary murram road has deteriorated due to heavy traffic. The contractor also reportedly vacated the site months ago.

Residents now fear that heavy rains could make the section impassable, cutting off transport along the busy highway.

Area MP Charles Nguna has urged KeNHA to expedite the construction of Mbakini Bridge, warning against the demolition of three other bridges before the stalled project is completed.

Residents are calling for urgent intervention before the onset of heavy rains worsens the situation.
