English clubs knocked out of the UEFA Champions League

Manchester City and Arsenal must now redirect their focus to the English Premier League after both teams were eliminated from contention for the UEFA Champions League.

City entered the tournament as defending champions, having performed remarkably last season by securing three major European trophies.

Arsenal, on the other hand, had aspirations of winning their first UEFA Champions League title. They were optimistic about reaching the finals, given their outstanding form this season.

Real Madrid ended Manchester City’s reign as UCL champions with an aggregate 3-4 victory at the Etihad Stadium, decided by a penalty shootout after both teams drew 1-1 in regular time.

In the first leg of the quarter-finals, Pep Guardiola’s side held Carlo Ancelotti’s team to a 3-3 draw.

In the return leg, City seemed poised to advance to the semi-finals against Bayern Munich when Luka Modric missed Real’s first penalty.

However, Bernardo Silva’s poor effort and another miss from substitute Mateo Kovacic were saved by goalkeeper Andriy Lunin, allowing former Chelsea defender Rudiger to secure victory for the experienced Champions League side.

Meanwhile, a solitary goal dashed Arsenal’s hopes of a UCL trophy as they suffered a disappointing exit at the hands of Bayern Munich in an electrifying atmosphere at Allianz Arena.

Joshua Kimmich’s powerful header in the 63rd minute from Raphael Guerreiro’s cross proved sufficient to send the Germans through to the semi-finals with a 3-2 aggregate victory, following a 2-2 draw in the first leg in London.

Although no English clubs remain in the competition, English involvement in this season’s Champions League isn’t over yet. Harry Kane’s Bayern Munich will face Jude Bellingham’s Real Madrid next, ensuring that at least one English star will compete in the final at Wembley on June 1.
