The National Police Service (NPS) has stepped up efforts to combat the manufacture and distribution of illicit alcohol and drugs in Siaya County following a successful multi-agency operation conducted in Gem-Yala Sub-County.
In a statement shared on its official X account on Sunday, June 14, 2026, the NPS said the operation was carried out jointly with National Government Administration Officers (NGAO) in North Gem Sub-Location.
According to the police, officers recovered 38 litres of chang’aa and 240 litres of kangara during the raid targeting illegal brewing activities in the area.
“The National Police Service, in collaboration with the National Government Administration Officers (NGAO), has intensified operations targeting the manufacture, possession, distribution and consumption of illicit alcoholic drinks in Gem-Yala Sub-County, Siaya County,” the statement read.
Five suspects linked to the illegal activities were arrested and are currently in police custody awaiting arraignment in court as investigations continue.
The operation forms part of ongoing efforts by security agencies to curb the spread of illicit brews and substance abuse, which have continued to pose serious health and social risks in many parts of the country.
The police further praised local administrators and residents for supporting the fight against illegal alcohol and drugs.
“The National Police Service commends local administrators and members of the public for their cooperation in combating illicit alcohol and substance abuse,” NPS stated.
Authorities have urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any information regarding the production, sale or distribution of illicit brews to the nearest police station.
