Four students have been taken into custody after being linked to a fire that destroyed a dormitory at Magereza Academy in Naivasha.
A fire broke out on the morning of Wednesday, May 13, destroying part of the school dormitory while students were attending evening classes.
Some students reportedly sustained injuries while attempting to salvage their belongings from the burning dormitory.
Following the incident, the school management closed the institution indefinitely to allow for investigations and repair works to be carried out.
According to Parents Association chairman Lawrence Mogaka, the four students were arrested after CCTV footage allegedly captured them at the scene during the fire.
He added that the students are expected to assist the DCI officers who remained at the scene with information regarding the incident.
Hanny Munyiri, a guardian, argued that the school administration should avoid using the incident as a reason to impose additional financial demands on parents, many of whom are already struggling with school expenses.
Munyiri urged the management to explore other sources of funding to facilitate the reconstruction of the dormitory and ensure that students return to learning as soon as possible.
He also questioned the decision to send all learners home, insisting that those responsible for the fire should be held fully accountable for the damage caused.
Another parent, Wilson Njenga, alleged that the school had previously experienced a similar dormitory fire but failed to inform parents, raising concerns about the safety and welfare of students at the institution.
Njenga further maintained that parents should not be compelled to contribute extra fees toward rebuilding the dormitory, arguing that the individuals linked to the incident should bear the financial responsibility.
