Muguka farmers optimistic with new market prospects in Djibouti

Following uncertainties in the local Múgúka market when the coastal counties pushed for the ban of the plant, Múgúka farmers have a reason to smile if delegates from Djibouti will approve the direct export of the stimulant to their country.

The delegates from Djibouti — one of the biggest consumers — accompanied by Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) officials who visited Dalvianna Muguka Farm in Runyenjes, Embu County, were impressed by the level of hygiene exhibited at the farm.

The Proprietor of the farm, Kariuki Simba, showcased and exhibited the process of harvesting and packing the Khat where one is expected to wash hands before getting into the farm.

The harvesters sprinkle water onto the leaves to remove any dust and wear gloves before embarking on the harvesting process that is followed by several stages of sorting out a packaging for export.

Runyenjes MP Eric Muchangi, who accompanied the team to the farms, noted that the farmers will reap huge benefits by doing direct exports to Djibouti.

Mbeere North MP Geoffrey Ruku said the new Market is a game changer to the Khat farmers and traders who are eagerly looking for external markets saying the Government has put its best foot forward to ensure there is a good market to cater for the huge Múgúka Production.
