ODM Party Leader Oburu Oginga has urged the government to move swiftly to cushion Kenyans from the rising cost of living following the latest increase in fuel prices.
Speaking during an ODM Nyanza Consultative Forum in Kisumu on Sunday, May 17, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader said Kenyans continue to struggle with the increasing cost of fuel following the latest review by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).
Oburu attributed the sharp increase in fuel prices to global factors, particularly instability linked to the conflict in the Middle East, but maintained that urgent measures are needed to cushion Kenyans from the economic pressure saying the party plans to engage President William Ruto and Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi to explore possible relief measures, including reducing fuel taxes.
“We know that bei ya Mafuta is high and our people are suffering. This is an international phenomenon, which is happening because of some war in the Middle East, but we are going to approach our government. We are going to approach President Ruto, and we also have our Minister of Finance here, John Mbadi.
“We are going to talk and see how people can be given some relief. It is a bit too high, and I’m sure, John, you can remove some taxes. You can lower them or remove them completely,” he said.
His remarks come days after EPRA announced new fuel prices for the period between May 15 and June 14, 2026.
Under the latest review, EPRA increased the price of Super Petrol by KSh16.65 per litre and Diesel by KSh46.29 per litre in its latest monthly fuel review. Super Petrol in Nairobi now retails at Ksh214.25 per litre, while Diesel has risen to Ksh242.92.
The fuel price increase has also sparked concern among motorists and transport operators, with the Motorists Association of Kenya and the Truckers Association of Kenya warning of a possible nationwide transport shutdown beginning Monday, May 18.
