Voices of valour: Kisumu women rise through STADA’s support

Are the voices of women and girls truly being heard in society, or has the ear of justice gone silent as many continue to suffer in silence? In Kisumu, one organisation is proving that silence can be broken, dignity restored, and hope rekindled.

For years, widows and vulnerable women have endured rejection, property grabbing, abuse, and neglect. Many were left homeless, hopeless, and without support.

But through STADA, a community based organisation led by lawyer Patricia Nudi Orao, women and girls are rediscovering themselves and reclaiming their place in society.

STADA has been at the forefront of empowering women through social and legal support programs. Some widows have received newly constructed homes after years of living in dire conditions.

Others, like Lydia Auma Otieno, have been assisted in legal battles, including recovering land that was nearly grabbed from them. “I had lost everything, but STADA stood by me. Today, I have my land back, and I feel human again,” Lydia said.

The organisation has also invested in young women through training and mentorship opportunities. One beneficiary, Roselyn Apiyo, received tailoring skills and now works at STADA making reusable sanitary pads.

“This job gave me independence. I can support myself and inspire other girls to believe in their potential,” Roselyn explained.

For many, this support is more than just assistance it is the restoration of dignity, confidence, and a voice within society. Milka Oluoch, a widow, shared her gratitude: “I had lost hope and everything, but now I have peace. My children are in school, and I can sleep without fear.”

Patricia Nudi Orao believes that justice must move beyond the constitution and become a lived reality.

“Human rights should not remain on paper. They must be felt in the daily lives of women and girls. Leaders must ensure that dignity is protected, and justice is accessible,” she urged.

In a society where vulnerable women are often ignored and silenced, STADA has become a symbol of resilience and hope. As these women rebuild their lives, one question lingers, will society finally stand up for women and girls, or continue watching them suffer in silence?
