Tunisia crash out of 2026 World Cup after second straight defeat

Tunisia’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign came to an end on Saturday after a 4-0 defeat to Japan in their second Group F match at Estadio Monterrey Guadalupe in Mexico.

The Carthage Eagles, who were beaten 5-1 by Sweden in their opening fixture, remain without a point after two matches and can no longer progress to the knockout stage despite having one group game left to play.

The North Africans headed into the match under new coach Hervé Renard after Sabri Lamouchi departed following the loss to Sweden, but the managerial change failed to halt their struggles.

Japan took the lead through Daichi Kamada after four minutes before Ayase Ueda doubled the advantage in the 31st minute. Junya Ito added a third in the second half before Ueda completed his brace to seal a dominant victory for the Samurai Blue.

The result leaves the Netherlands top of Group F on four points, level with Japan, while Sweden sit third on three points and Tunisia remain bottom without a point.

Tunisia will now wrap up its campaign against the Netherlands, with only pride left to play for before exiting the tournament.

Tunisia joins Haiti and Türkiye as the only teams confirmed to have been eliminated from the 2026 FIFA World Cup so far.

All three nations have lost their opening two group matches and remain without a point, ending their hopes of reaching the expanded Round of 32 with one group-stage fixture remaining.

The 2026 World Cup, being hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada, is currently in the group stage, with the top two teams from each of the 12 groups and the eight best third-placed teams advancing to the Round of 32.
