Explained: Why fight erupted in an event attended by CSs Wahome, Jumwa and Chelugui

Chaos erupted at Kigumo Bendera grounds in Kigumo, Murang’a County, after supporters of area Woman Representative Betty Maina clashed with those of Maragua MP Mary Waithira.

The two lawmakers were among the leaders who had graced a fundraising event for basket weavers organised by Nominated Senator Veronica Maina.

Drama started when Maina arrived at the meeting accompanied by her supporters, temporarily halting the proceedings.

Later, when given a chance to address the gathering, a section the crowd started heckling her stirring unrest among the people.

In her reaction, the Woman Rep. told them off claiming they have been paid by the Maragua MP to humiliate her.

“I know these people here shouting at me have been paid few coins to boo at me and I will not be intimidated by anybody,” she said.

Amid the heckling, her microphone was switched off. She insisted she must address the people to deliver her message.

Waithira, who was presiding over the event, however, castigated the Woman Rep., saying the event was going on smoothly until she turned up.

Waithira accused her of causing chaos to seek political mileage.

“We had come here to fundraise money for the women to help boost their initiative but sadly it has turned to a political battle field,” said the MP.

Cabinet Secretary for Lands Alice Wahome, who was also dragged into the chaos, said its very embarrassing for the leaders to wash their dirty linen in public.

“We need to embrace unity as leaders and set good precedence to the public,” remarked CS Wahome.

In what appears to be a supremacy battle over prominence in the area, the tussle between the two leaders has been brewing for several months now but went full blown today.

In several instances the two have had exchange of words with their supporters taking the ‘fight’ to social media.
