Government introduces new special number plates for vehicles

The government of Kenya has introduced new vehicle registration number plates, coloured green for electric vehicles and motorbikes.

The new number plates were unveiled by Transport cabinet secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen on Wednesday March 27, 2024 at KICC, Nairobi.

Speaking during the launch of e-mobility policy dubbed Draft National Electric Mobility Policy at KICC, Murkomen explained that introduction of the new number plates is a move to promote faster adoption of electronic vehicles in the country.

“To promote faster adoption of electric vehicles, we have begun the process of assigning green-coloured number plates to all electric vehicles, including two-wheelers.

“Special plates will help raise awareness about electric vehicles among the general public and encourage more people to consider switching to e-mobility.

“We are also setting up charging infrastructure at our Ministry headquarters,” Murkomen explained.

He added that the shift to electric vehicles (EVs) will significantly cut emissions of greenhouse gases while reducing the petroleum import bill, currently standing at Ksh 628.4 billion.

At the same time, the Transport CS noted that the Kenya Kwanza government is committed to creating an enabling environment for the adoption of electric vehicles.

He also explained that the government was partnering with the private sector, international investors, and academic institutions to build the necessary infrastructure for electric vehicles in the country.

“Glad to have today unveiled, together with my Investment, Trade and Industry colleague CS Rebecca Miano, the Draft National Electric Mobility Policy that is ready to go for public participation.

“The policy, which will guide the development of electric mobility in all transportation modes – roads, rail, air and maritime – will provide a transition framework from the internal combustion engine now in use,” Murkomen explained.

The draft policy also suggests incentives for electric vehicles adoption and support for local manufacturing.

Furthermore, Murkomen noted that he will be taking to the Cabinet a proposal for a phased fleet replacement programme for all GoK vehicles from internal combustion engines to EVs.

According to Murkomen, the move will in the long run, save taxpayers billions of shillings on fuel and other maintenance costs.
