Nairobi intensifies crackdown on illicit brews through community campaign

The Nairobi City County Alcoholic Drinks Control and Licensing Board on Monday, June 22 officially rolled out a series of public sensitization and awareness campaigns.

The campaigns, which are in strict compliance with the mandate of the Nairobi City County Alcoholic Drinks Control and License Act, 2014, are scheduled for; Ruaraka Sub-County — Mathare North Social Hall, Embakasi West Sub-County Swimming Pool Hall, Umoja I and Embakasi East Sub-County, Chief’s Camp Mihango.

Led by a multi-sectoral leadership team including Lydia Mathia (Chief Officer, Business and Hustler Opportunities), Godfrey Ochele (Director, Liquor Licensing), and Judith Anyango (Vice Chair, Liquor Board), the county is prioritizing grassroots engagement to foster healthier, safer, and more productive neighborhoods.

Speaking at the Ruaraka Sub-County — Mathare North Social Hall Lydia Mathia, Chief Officer, Business and Hustler Opportunities said, ”Our primary objective is not merely regulation, but holistic transformation. Through these sensitization meetings, we are empowering our communities with the critical knowledge required to make informed life choices. By tackling the root causes and devastating impacts of alcohol abuse, we actively protect our human capital and pave a sustainable path for local business and economic growth.”

On her part, Judith Anyango, Vice Chair, Alcoholic Drinks Control and Licensing Board, said: “The ultimate success of this public health campaign rests heavily on community ownership. We are calling upon local leaders, parents, and the youth to actively show up and participate. Together, we can build a vigilant and supportive social network that protects vulnerable groups and promotes alternative, healthier socioeconomic opportunities for our young people.”

The county wide initiatives aim to directly educate residents across several sub-counties on the severe socio-economic and health risks associated with irresponsible alcohol consumption.

Godfrey Ochele, Director, Liquor Licensing, said: “As the County’s Liquor Department our regulatory mandate goes far beyond the issuance of licenses; we bear a fundamental responsibility to protect public wellness and ensure orderly business operations. These forums allow us to interface directly with both residents and liquor operators to promote strict compliance with the Act, creating an ecosystem where businesses thrive responsibly without endangering public health.”
