“Sifuna has commanding power, and national appeal to be Opposition’s presidential flagbearer” – James Gakuya

Embakasi North MP James Gakuya has endorsed Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna as the most suitable candidate to lead the United Opposition into the next General Election, while calling for a free and secure Ol Kalou by-election scheduled for Thursday, July 16, 2026.

Speaking during an interview on TV47 Breakfast hosted by Fred Indimuli, Gakuya said Sifuna possesses the qualities needed to unite the opposition and attract support across the country.

“Sifuna has the commanding power, charisma and national appeal to draw massive support in Nyanza, the Coast, and Nairobi. If the United Opposition wants to win, its leaders should set aside personal ambitions and rally behind Sifuna as the presidential flagbearer,” he said.

Turning to the Ol Kalou by-election, the legislator urged the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and the National Police Service to work together to guarantee a peaceful and credible electoral process.

“We want free, fair, and verifiable mechanisms for the Ol Kalou by-election. There must be collaboration between the IEBC Chairman and the Inspector General of Police to ensure a conducive environment at every polling station.

This must be guaranteed; otherwise, we will be at the polling stations to prevent intruders from disrupting the process,” Gakuya stated.

He also raised concerns over what he described as the government’s failure to tackle insecurity and politically instigated violence, warning that the country risks sliding into deeper instability if decisive action is not taken.

“The government has not taken any action against goon attacks. In fact, we are heading the Haiti way, sending our police officers for peacekeeping missions abroad while we remain in a worrying state of insecurity at home.

There should be no excuses from the inspector general of police; he should take action against anyone who breaks the law, whether they are politicians or billionaires,” he said.

His remarks come a day before voters head to the polls in the closely watched Ol Kalou by-election, where security and the credibility of the electoral process are expected to be key issues.

The Ol Kalou by-election is expected to be closely watched as political parties seek to test their influence ahead of the 2027 general elections.
