7,000 kilograms of food, 800 books: CAK supports Chesongoch schools following devastating landslides

The Competition Authority of Kenya (CAK) has extended support to schools affected by the devastating landslides that struck Chesongoch and surrounding areas in Elgeyo Marakwet County, providing essential supplies to help sustain learning activities and support affected learners.

The assistance package includes 6,950 kilograms of food, 800 books, 1,000 Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD)-approved teaching materials, and sanitary towels for school-going girls.

Speaking during the donation exercise, CAK Director General David Kemei said the support is aimed at easing the burden on schools and students affected by the disaster while ensuring that learning continues uninterrupted.

The landslides, which occurred in November 2025, claimed lives, displaced families, and disrupted learning in several areas, including Chesongoch, Embobut-Embolot, Sambirir, and Kibendo. Many residents were left homeless and in need of urgent humanitarian assistance.

As recovery efforts continue, the government has embarked on a resettlement programme for affected families. Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Wisley Rotich said significant progress has already been made in rebuilding homes for victims.

“Nine months ago, we lost our brothers and sisters in Chesongoch, Embobut-Embolot, Sambirir and Kibendo following mudslides. Today, rebuilding and resettlement efforts are ongoing. The two affected families in Kibendo have already moved into their new homes, while construction of 53 houses in Chesongoch is at various stages of completion,” said the governor.

Governor Rotich added that the resettlement programme will subsequently be extended to Sambirir and Embobut as the county and national governments continue working together to restore normalcy in the affected communities.

He commended CAK for its timely intervention, noting that the donation would help ensure learners in the affected areas continue with their education despite the challenges brought about by the disaster.

The donation is expected to benefit hundreds of learners and reinforce ongoing recovery efforts aimed at rebuilding lives and strengthening community resilience in the aftermath of the landslides.
