Shouting ‘Ruto must go’ alone is not enough for Wamunyoro coalition – Senator Wamatinga

Nyeri Senator Wahome Wamatinga says that shouting “Ruto must go” at the top of their voices is not enough for the opposition to convince Kenyans ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Speaking on TV47’s Morning Cafe show on Wednesday, May 7, Senator Wamatinga launched a scathing attack on opposition leaders and their meeting during the weekend at Wamunyoro village, the home of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

According to the lawmaker, the current opposition leaders have shown that they have no meaningful agenda for Kenyans, other than saying “Ruto must go” and vowing to make William Ruto a one-term president.

“We saw the gathering in Mathira, it was quite a sad moment… Looking at the leaders who had gathered at Wamunyoro, instead of meeting to discuss what political discourse we are supposed to take as a country, the only agenda they can put on the table is ‘Ruto must go’ and make the president a one-term president,” Senator Wamatinga said.

Wamatinga says that the current crop of opposition leaders is a coalition of failed leaders with tainted track record in the public service.

“Starting with the former CS Agriculture Mithika Linturi. When he was before the Senate to answer questions of fake fertiliser, he defended and said there is no fake fertiliser, it is on record. Look at former Public Service CS Justin Muturi. I have been asking myself, he has been sitting in that docket for two years, but what is it that he can tell us he’s taken home? How did he perform? What can Kenyans remember Fred Matiang’i with other than the River Yala incidences. Look at former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, the two years he has been second in command, what is it that he can show other than dividing Kenyans along tribal lines and telling us this country belongs to shareholders? It is such a big pity for the country if that is the alternative.”

Wamatinga said that even the messaging of the so-called Wamunyoro Coalition leaders does not inspire confidence among Kenyans. “I expected the leaders to come and tell us, ‘these are the problems with the current regime, and these are the solutions that we are proposing’.”

During the same show, Nominated MP Sabina Chege also accused the opposition leaders, hell-bent on unseating President Ruto in 2027, of being hypocrites.

“It’s unfortunate that the leadership we have is selfish. We’re busy focusing on 2027, but are we asking ourselves what we’ve achieved in the past two years? Are the people saying ‘Ruto Must Go’ genuine? I would say no — the majority of them are failures.”
